Reclined Spinal Twist Pose – Supta Matsyendrasana

Posted in Yoga Asanas

After a long day nothing feels better then hitting your yoga mat and twisting your spine in different poses to give it a good stretch. One of those spinal twists I like best is the Reclined Spinal Twist Pose. This pose will stretch your back and glutes, and relaxes your spine. It’s also good as a detox move by bring fresh blood to abdominal and pelvic organs. But the most satisfying effect is how the Reclined Spinal Twist will calm your mind and relieve any anxiety. I love to use it in any relaxing sequence. Here’s how it works…

Lie on your back. Stretch your arms out at shoulder height, palms down. Bend your right leg and place your foot flat on the floor next to your left knee. Place your left hand on top of your right knee. With your exhale, gently guide your right knee toward the floor. Turn yur head towrd the right. Hold the pose and take slow, deep breaths.

When ready, untwist with an inhale and switch sides. Don’t forget to breath and feel you body melt into your mat. Be aware of your alignment. Gaze in the opposite direction of the twist, and press your shoulder blades towards the floor. Don’t force the twist. Allow gravity to release knee toward floor.
