Meditation? Yes You Can…

Posted in Meditation

I can’t meditate…I hear it over and over again. There is a misconception that meditation take skills or education that most people don’t posses. Not true. The only thing it takes to meditate is you! Meditation is taking a moment to pause, breathe, and be still in a moment.

Yogis will tell you meditation is about a journey to enlightenment….which it is. It’s about connecting to the spiritual higher being…which it is. That there is some deep soul searching expedition involved in meditation…which there is. But it all begins with a simple breath. So let’s start there!

If you think you can’t meditate, then don’t think of it as meditation. This is simply a series of breaths. Let’s start with what is known as Belly Breathing. Because this is a core breath that is used to bring awareness into the body and calm the mind, most yoga classes begin with this practice.

Here’s how…Find a comfortable, quite place to sit. You can even chose to lay down if you wish. Above all, the important thing is be comfortable during meditation. Next, relax your hands in your lap or rest your arms at your side with the palms facing up. Then inhale through the nose and allow the belly to expand. After that, hold the breath, now exhale through the nose and allow the belly to lower. That simple!

When you think about the belly or abdomen expanding, think about a balloon as it expands. Therefore, make sure the breath is deep and elongated. Now you can use this breathing technique anytime you want to relax or let go of your thoughts. Therefore, just keep breathing over and over, slowly, feeling every moment of breath. You can sit and breath for as long as you like. Allow you mind to relax and your body to feel the nourishment of air. There’s no right or wrong here…meditation is just about air!
